Here are tips to help you winterize your home:
Have your rain gutters and downspouts inspected and
cleaned. This can prevent blockage to drains, flooding and roof damage.
Have roofing and
plumbing vent pipes inspected for signs of deterioration. Also have roof and ceilings checked for proper insulation.
Inspect all exterior walls, foundation, patio, steps and walkways for cracks or deterioration. Hire a pro for major signs of deterioration and repairs.
Visually inspect weather-stripping around doors and
windows and replace dirty air filters.
Check furnace to ensure proper operation. Make sure the fireplace damper is in the closed position when the fireplace is not in use.
Remember, when hiring for repairs, including a contractor,
handyman, or carpenter, you should always get written estimates detailing the cost of material and
labor. Also ask for start and finish dates.
